The Key to Geese Management

Introduction 

The resurgence of the Canada goose is one of wildlife preservation’s greatest success stories.  As recently as 1956 there were only a few thousand Canada geese in the United States.  However, with the enactment of strict protection and conservation measures, their population has rebounded to more than 3 million birds.  Furthermore, Canada goose population doubles every three years.  Another reason for the dramatic increase in populations has been the creation of ideal Canada geese habitat-large, open grassy areas, often surrounding ponds and parks.  The development of parks, golf courses, athletic fields, commercial and residential areas has provided the perfect setting for supporting these urban and suburban flocks 

Problem 

A goose can eat up to 3 pounds of grass per day.  This kind of heavy feeding and foraging can leave an area stripped of vegetation.  In return, the same goose will leave as much as 3 pounds of excrement on your property as their calling card.  Such a “Drop Zone” is a veritable minefield covered with “goose grease,” often making the area unusable.  The costs associated with repairing overgrazed lawns and cleaning up the goose droppings can be substantial.  In addition, nitrogen content in the droppings can contribute to excessive algae growth in pounds and lakes.  Add to this “mixture” concerns about noise, aggressive behavior, and potential risks to human health, and it is understandable that the frequency of conflicts between geese and humans is on the rise.  

Typical Solutions 

There are a number of techniques that have been employed to deal with geese, including harassment methods (noise making devices, introduction of real or perceived predators), or physical barriers (to landing on or exiting a body of water).  Unfortunately, geese quickly adapt to any threats that does not have consequence.  Loud noise, flashing lights or streamers, fake owls, dead goose decoys would be more effective if the geese experience physical or lethal consequences.  Otherwise, these harassments represent a threat without consequence.  

Solution

Modification of a goose habitat through denial of the goose ability to feed is the most effective means to take back your turf.  If a goose cannot eat, it has no reason to stay!  

FlightControl® is a naturally-occurring compound that effectively deters Canada geese from congregating in and around sensitive areas where their presence often conflicts with human activity.  FlightControl® works like a biological fence, allowing a property owner to heard geese off critical areas, with the option of maintaining habitat areas where geese can coexist on the property.  The product has been successfully used to manage Canada geese on open grassy areas such as parks, gold courses, school grounds, athletic fields, office and commercial complexes, and residential communities.

 The product works without introducing any offensive odor or noticeable residue on the turf, providing outstanding control without harming humans, wildlife, vegetation, or the geese. 

FlightControl® works in two ways in convincing the geese to avoid feeding: 

1. When sprayed on turf, the compound absorbs ultraviolet light, something the geese can see even though humans cannot.  This sends a visual warning signal to the geese that something is wrong with their food. 

2. When the geese sample treated turf, they experience a harmless, but very effective digested irritation, reinforcing the message that there is something wrong with the food.
